Causey's Approach to Strategic Planning

Core philosophy

A strategic plan that sits on a shelf is a plan that fails. Causey is built around one conviction: when your team can see the plan, own their part, and track real progress, your mission moves faster.

This belief comes from 25+ years of working alongside nonprofit leaders building, executing, and refreshing strategic plans.

The START framework

Causey includes the START Lite course in every tier — a guided walkthrough of nonprofit strategic planning. The framework breaks plan creation into:

  1. Survey — what's true now? Stakeholder input, environmental scan, internal assessment.
  2. Target — where are you going? Vision, mission alignment, 3-5 year goals.
  3. Approach — how will you get there? Strategies and initiatives.
  4. Roadmap — when does it happen? Timelines, owners, milestones.
  5. Track — are you on course? Metrics, regular updates, course correction.

The platform mirrors this structure: goals → strategies → action items → metrics, with owners and timelines on each.

Plan structure in Causey

  • Goals — broad outcomes ("Increase youth engagement").
  • Strategies — how you'll pursue each goal ("Expand after-school programming to two new sites").
  • Action Items — specific deliverables under each strategy, with owners and dates.
  • Metrics — quantitative measures attached to goals (and trackable over time on charts).

Built-in guidance

  • Templates — common nonprofit plan structures (program-based, theory-of-change, balanced scorecard).
  • Examples — real plan structures used by Causey customers.
  • Inline help — context-sensitive guidance as you build.
  • START Lite course — self-paced video lessons walking through each phase.

Premium onboarding (Solid tier)

The Solid tier includes a Guided Setup Call with the Causey team to:

  • Translate an existing plan (Word doc, PDF, spreadsheet) into Causey structure.
  • Set up metric tracking and reporting cadence.
  • Establish the team check-in rhythm (who updates what, when).
  • Configure board-ready reporting views.

When to use Causey vs. a strategic planning consultant

  • Causey alone: existing plan that needs a home, or a team that wants to DIY plan creation with the START course.
  • Causey + consultant: complex multi-stakeholder plan, board retreat facilitation needed, or a major strategic refresh.

The platform doesn't replace good facilitation — but it ensures the plan that comes out of the retreat doesn't die in a binder.
