Log Work

JQL Reference
Common JQL patterns:
assignee = currentUser() AND status != Doneproject = PROJ AND issuetype = Bug AND priority = Highsprint in openSprints() AND status = "In Progress"updated >= -7d AND project = PROJparent = PROJ-123(issues in an epic)
Configuration
Do NOT search the filesystem for mcp-config.json or similar files directly.
Do NOT read ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json directly — always route through custom agent file.
MCP server is configured in the jira.agent.md custom agent file.
Environment Variables
Use environment variables defined in .copilot/.env.
Connectivity Check
Before taking any action, verify the Jira MCP server is reachable:
- Call
jira_get_all_projects(lightweight read) as a probe. - If the call fails or returns an error, immediately stop and report: "Jira MCP server is unavailable. Cannot proceed."
- Only proceed with the user's request after a successful probe response.
Best Practices
- Use JQL for precise searches across large projects
- Always fetch available transitions before transitioning an issue
- Use
jira_batch_create_issueswhen creating multiple issues at once - Use
jira_get_issuewithfields='*all'to see custom fields
Limitations
- Jira Cloud only (not Server/Data Center for all endpoints)
- Write operations (create/update/delete) require appropriate permissions
- Custom field IDs vary per Jira instance (use
jira_search_fieldsto discover them)
