Science Lab Results Rules (Thematic)
Scope
Use this skill when resolving specimen spending, interpreting d100 science outcomes, and balancing risk/reward from experimental analysis.
Outcome band structure
<=30: no effect.31-45: gadgets gain (scaled by specimens spent).46-50: nutronium gain (scaled by specimens spent).51-100: event table outcomes (broad spectrum from major boons to severe crises).
Positive outcome families
- Single-use psychic ability grants (often with enhancement capacity tied to specimens spent).
- Equipment progression (weapon/armor upgrades or charge infusion).
- Consumable bundles and tactical-use items.
- Permanent ship benefits (ecosystem/healing/environmental resilience features).
- Permanent character transformations (mutations/augmentations).
Hazard outcome families
- Shipboard hostile spawns (slayer/commander-type threats, dimensional incursions).
- Systemic ship crises (AI takeover, nanovirus, temporal loop, reality fracture).
- Crew-wide debuffs/mental effects requiring external treatment.
- Cascading objective encounters tied to repair/check thresholds.
Scaling logic
- Number of specimens spent increases both upside and threat intensity.
- Many checks and spawned threats scale by party level and specimen count.
- Some permanent outcomes are intentionally double-edged (power + drawback).
Adjudication priorities
- Treat science outcomes as narrative events, not merely loot rolls.
- Apply location/system consequences if ship components are disabled.
- Preserve meaningful tradeoffs between immediate gain and downstream risk.
