Combat Positioning and Attack Rules (Thematic)
Scope
Use this skill for line-of-fire disputes, adjacency triggers, cover math, and attack/damage adjudication.
Attack core
- Attacker and defender roll opposed
d20 + modifiers. - Defaults: weapon attacks use attacker skill vs defender agility; many abilities use intelligence vs willpower.
- Hit if attacker total exceeds defender total.
Damage pipeline
- Roll damage dice (with exploding dice rule).
- Add melee strength bonus where applicable.
- Subtract toughness (unless ignored by effect text).
- Apply to temporary health first, then current health.
Positional pressure rules
- Threatened: in melee range of enemy.
- Major movement can trigger opportunity actions when leaving threatened adjacency.
- Ranged attacks can trigger opportunity attacks from adjacent enemies.
- Missed ranged attacks may still hit adjacent creatures near intended target.
Terrain interaction
- Cover: defensive block value vs ranged attacks.
- Concealment: sight-obscuring defensive block value.
- Obstacles: full line-of-sight and/or movement blockers.
- Taking Cover doubles current terrain-cover value but constrains movement.
Tactical stances
- Firing Position: fixed facing, no movement, gains offensive bonus choices and improved defensive posture.
- Exposed Targets: targets with no cover or concealment allow attacker offensive bonus choice.
- Flanking: exact opposite-side adjacency grants advantage.
