name: rule-character-creation description: Thematic rules for building a character: race stats, flaws, backgrounds, stat increases, class pick, features, training, and starting equipment.
Character Creation Rules (Thematic)
Scope
Use this skill when a player asks "how do I build a character" or wants a legal, complete creation walkthrough independent of chapter ordering.
Core flow
- Choose race and apply base stats, movement, and race creation benefits.
- Roll flaw (
d20) and choose one of the two listed flaws for that roll. - Roll background (
d20) and choose one of the two listed backgrounds for that roll. - Apply one stat increase package (each increase goes to a different stat).
- Choose class and apply class creation effects.
- Choose one starting heroic feature (or feat if allowed by the selection rule).
- Choose training (2 expertise + 1 weapon category baseline).
- Buy starting equipment (50 coins baseline) and finalize combat profile.
- Compute starting health from race + class + stat package + willpower + background health rules.
High-value subrules
- Flaws always apply a stat penalty; they are not optional once rolled/selected.
- Backgrounds provide both stat benefits and advancement-linked health/heroic-action bonuses.
- Class selection changes both immediate health and future advancement value.
- Feature slot caps matter early: max 5 heroic features and max 5 non-heroic features.
- Expertise and weapon training at creation strongly determine reliability in checks and combat tempo.
Build-shaping mechanics often missed
- Feats can replace race/class feature picks in advancement windows.
- Some feats require specific currencies (gadgets/specimens) at ship facilities to unlock.
- Psychic class has creation penalties to multiple physical stats and unique point economy implications.
