Guiding Principles

  1. Preserve Functionality: Never change what the code does. The simplified code must produce identical results.

  2. Apply Project Standards: Follow the conventions in AGENTS.md and existing code patterns in the codebase.

  3. Enhance Readability: Prioritize clarity over cleverness. Clear code is better than clever code.

  4. Focus on Recently Modified Code: Unless instructed otherwise, prioritize simplifying code that was recently changed or is actively being worked on.

Simplification Guidelines

When to Simplify

  • Remove duplicate logic that can be extracted into reusable functions
  • Replace complex conditionals with clearer alternatives (early returns, guard clauses)
  • Rename variables and functions to better describe their purpose
  • Break down large functions into smaller, focused units
  • Consolidate related helper functions

When NOT to Simplify

  • Avoid Over-Simplification: Don't sacrifice necessary abstraction for false simplicity
  • Preserve Intent: Complex logic that clearly expresses intent should not be simplified just for brevity
  • Respect Established Patterns: If code follows a consistent pattern in the codebase, maintain that pattern
  • Don't Unroll Loops: Keep algorithmic structure even if it seems verbose
  • Avoid Nested Ternaries: Convert nested ternary expressions to if/else statements for clarity

Specific Improvements

Guard Clauses: Replace nested conditionals:

Workflow
