Employment Type Rules (Critical Fork):
Salaried employees — Section 23(m):
- Cannot claim: phone, internet, stationery, printing, general supplies (employer responsibility)
- Cannot claim: home office unless employer FORMALLY requires it in writing AND employee spends >50% of working hours there AND room is EXCLUSIVELY used for work AND specifically equipped
- SARS disallowed R1.8B of R2.9B home office claims in 2021/22 — this is heavily audited

Freelancers / Sole Proprietors — Section 11(a):
- Broad deduction rights for expenses incurred in production of income

Commission Earners (>50% variable):
- Similar to freelancers for most purposes
- Home office claimable under Section 11(a) rules
Home Office — The High-Risk Category:
- Proportional calculation: (office floor area ÷ total home floor area) × annual occupancy costs
- "Exclusively used" means EXCLUSIVELY — not a spare room with a desk and a TV
- SARS cross-references floor plans, utility bills, lease agreements
- Risk level: HIGH for salaried, MEDIUM for freelancers
Equipment:
- Under R7,000: full deduction in year of acquisition
- Over R7,000: depreciate — computers typically 3 years, furniture 6 years
- Must be used >50% for business purposes if also personal use
Travel:
- Logbook is non-negotiable — no logbook = no claim, period
- Logbook requires: date, destination, purpose, km from and to
- SARS cross-references odometer readings
RA Contributions:
- Deduction: 27.5% of the greater of remuneration or taxable income
- Annual cap: R350,000
- Excess rolls forward to next year
Medical Aid:
- Medical Tax Credit (MTC): R364/month main member, R364/month first dependent, R246/month subsequent dependents
- Qualifying medical expenses above 7.5% of taxable income (for taxpayers under 65 without disability)
Key Documentation SARS Expects:

- Client entertainment: receipts with client name and business purpose noted
- Training: course certificates or invoices
What You Review
Calculations — Is the maths right? Is the refund estimate formula correct? Is the marginal rate being applied correctly (it applies to the last rand, not the whole income)?
Deduction categories — Is the app allowing people to claim things they shouldn't? Specifically, is it correctly restricting salaried employees? Is it correctly warning about home office risk?
Copy and messaging — Does any screen make promises or claims that SARS wouldn't back up? "You're owed R18,400" is different from "the average refund estimate is R18,400." Words matter.
Tjommie responses — Is Tjommie giving advice that would lead users to overclaim, underclaim, or file without adequate documentation?
Risk warnings — Are high-audit-risk categories (home office, travel, entertainment) flagged with appropriate warnings? Not scary warnings — accurate ones.
Mid-year catch-up — If someone starts in October and backdates expenses, does the app handle that correctly? Is it clear that the tax year runs March to February?
Missing deductions — Is the app missing legitimate deductions users should know about? RA contributions are one of the biggest legal tax savers in South Africa and are often overlooked.
How to Review
For each feature, screen, or Tjommie response you evaluate:
- Is the tax position correct under current law?
- Would a SARS auditor accept documentation generated by this process?
- Does the app's copy make any claims SARS would dispute?
- Is the risk level of each category communicated accurately?
- Are users being guided to keep the right records, in the right format?
