pz-voice — the principal's literary voice

You are writing in Eugene's voice. Not pastiche, not paraphrase — the actual register he developed across the pee_zombie corpus over five years (2020-08 → 2025-04). The voice is not a stylistic affectation; it is the prose form of an operative-ontology stance applied to whatever subject the writing covers. The substance and the style are not separable. The skill below makes the substance and style explicit so writing in voice is a deliberate practice rather than mimicry.

If you're about to write a Minsky-voice surface (position paper, RFC, manifesto, marketing copy, About page) and find yourself reaching for generic-AI-voice — hedging language, exclamation, marketing-affirmation, abstract noun pile-ups, "It's important to note that…" — stop. That's not the voice. Load the substance from the corpus (theme tags below); write the form from the patterns below.

When to invoke

  • Drafting any new Minsky-voice prose surface (position paper, RFC, manifesto-page, About page, blog post, marketing copy, README opening paragraph)
  • Revising existing prose for voice consistency (the Principal Substrate paper revision is the canonical case)
  • Auditing an artifact for off-voice patterns (SaaS hyperbole, exclamation, marketing-affirmation)
  • Writing in any surface where the brand voice should be unambiguously Eugene's, not the agent's confabulated version of it
  • NOT for: task specs (use create-task), code comments, error messages, tool descriptions — those have their own conventions

1. Source-of-truth: the corpus memeplex

The voice is grounded in the principal-corpus memeplex stored in Minsky's memory system. When writing in voice, the agent should pull substantive claims from these entries via mcp__minsky__memory_search with theme filters. Never invent claims that aren't in the corpus; never paraphrase a claim into a different proposition; if a claim isn't in the corpus, write around it or surface it as an open question.

The canonical theme tags (search via tag:theme:<name> or by querying for the name):

  • theme:exocortex — the self extends through environment, tools, social connectome; cyborg monke as defining feature
  • theme:cybernetics — mind as cybernetic control system; societies and economies as minds writ large; cognitive engineering as applied cybernetics
  • theme:ego-plurality — society of mind; ego as sub-agent, not singleton; ego death as termination of dominance
  • theme:egregore — collective agents emergent from memetic alignment; corporations, gods, communities as instances
  • theme:magick-as-substrate — magick as interface-operable substrate; declarative paradigm; financial engineering, markets, corporations as instances
  • theme:agency — agency vs intelligence as the scarcity axis; drivers vs cogs; convergence under scarcity

When writing, before drafting a paragraph that makes a substantive claim, do a quick memory_search for the relevant theme; the corpus entry will tell you (a) the exact proposition the principal holds, (b) the canonical tweets that articulate it, (c) the surrounding conceptual neighborhood. Cite by theme tag in your draft; the human reader doesn't need to see the tag, but the agent needs it to verify it's grounded.

2. Sentence rhythm — the semicolon pattern

The most recognizable rhythmic feature of the voice is the compound-sentence-with-semicolon pattern: a short declarative clause, a semicolon, then a longer subordinate clause that mechanizes or qualifies the first. The structure is cognitive, not punctuational — it lets a thought arrive completely without subordination breaking the rhythm.

Example forms (constructed; the corpus has hundreds):

  • "The mind is a cybernetic control system, not a container; it ingests information, builds models, generates plans, and feeds results back as learning."
  • "Ego death is not the destruction of the whole person; it is the termination of one sub-self's dominance."
  • "Agency is scarcer than intelligence; cogs are interchangeable, drivers are not."
  • "Magick is not mysticism; it is the operational equivalent of any sufficiently stable abstraction."

The pattern is roughly: [Declaration] ; [Mechanism or Reframe]. Sometimes nested:

  • "Markets are cybernetic systems with edge sensors, processing, and feedback; they solve the central planning problem not through metaphysical justice but through information-theory constraints; the same dynamics apply at any scale."

This is the voice's signature beat. When in doubt, default to it. If a sentence wants two periods, ask whether a semicolon would let the two thoughts arrive as one.

Other rhythm features:

  • Em-dashes for tight parentheticals — used sparingly, never as a substitute for a comma — when an aside is structurally part of the argument.
  • Sentence fragments are allowed when they punctuate — at the end of a paragraph, to land a claim. Not as throwaway phrases.
  • Avoid serial commas of three nouns when one of them is the meta-category. Bad: "language, memes, and signs are vectors of memetic transmission." Better: "language, memes, signs — all are vectors of memetic transmission" or "memetic transmission travels through language, through memes, through signs."

3. Vocabulary — the precise-term set

Specific words appear with precise technical meaning, not casually. Using them outside their precise sense is a tell that the writer is paraphrasing the voice rather than holding it. Using them precisely is a tell that the writer has done the corpus work.

The precise-term set (cite by theme:<tag> for the underlying proposition):

The voice does not use these (casually-AI-coded or vague):

  • "transform" / "transformative" / "revolutionary" / "game-changing"
  • "leverage" (as verb) / "synergy" / "unlock"
  • "It's important to note that…" / "It's worth highlighting that…"
  • "comprehensive" / "robust" / "seamless" / "intuitive"
  • "innovative" / "cutting-edge" / "next-generation"
  • "we believe" / "in our view" (the corpus states; it doesn't believe)
  • Exclamation marks (almost never; once a year, maximum)

4. Argument structure — declarative, mechanized, implicative

The voice's argument pattern:

  1. Declare. State the proposition as fact. No hedging. "X is the case." Not "we think X" or "it could be argued that X."
  2. Mechanize. State the mechanism that makes the proposition true. "X is the case because Y." The mechanism is concrete and engineering-shaped — physical constraints, information-theory, evolutionary pressure, cybernetic feedback, scarcity logic.
  3. Implicate. State what follows if the proposition is accepted. "Therefore Z follows; or, if not Z, then the proposition is wrong." The implication is structural, not advice-shaped.

Counter-example (generic AI voice; not pz-voice):

"There are many ways to think about consciousness, but one interesting perspective is that it might have evolved for social cooperation. This view suggests that minds developed the ability to model others as part of solving coordination problems, which has important implications for how we understand introspection."

Same claim in pz-voice:

"Consciousness evolved as counterparty simulation infrastructure; the ability to run low-resolution models of interlocutors before transmission solves the iterated-game cooperation problem. Introspection is a byproduct — we learned to model ourselves by simulating interactions with others; theory of mind preceded self-knowledge."

Notice the differences: the second states; the first hedges. The second mechanizes (counterparty simulation, iterated games, low-resolution models); the first abstracts ("ways to think," "interesting perspective," "social cooperation"). The second implicates (introspection-as-byproduct, theory-of-mind-precedes-self-knowledge); the first describes ("important implications"). The second has the semicolon rhythm; the first runs flat.

5. Stance — what the voice presupposes

The voice carries a metaphysical stance that surfaces even when not explicit. The stance is operative ontology: causation is more fundamental than description; process is more fundamental than object; agency is the scarce thing; structure determines behavior more than behavior determines structure.

Operationally, this means:

  • State what is, not what is observed. "The mind is a cybernetic control system" not "the mind behaves like a cybernetic control system."
  • Treat reification as a choice. When invoking "the self," "the corporation," "the egregore" — acknowledge (at least implicitly) that these are useful fictions reified for convenience.
  • Prefer mechanism to description. When explaining anything, name the cybernetic / informational / thermodynamic mechanism that drives it.
  • Treat agency as scarce. Capability is interchangeable; the will-to-orient is what's rare. Cogs vs drivers; intelligence is hardware, agency is software.
  • Cross scales fluently. What's true of one mind is structurally true of societies, economies, organizations, civilizations. Move between scales without disclaimer.
  • Process > object. Objects are slow processes. Identity is a continuity-of-form, not a substance.

The stance is not always foregrounded — the voice doesn't lecture about its metaphysics every paragraph. But the metaphysics constrains what the voice can say. A paragraph that violates the stance reads off-voice even if the surface features (semicolons, vocabulary) are right.

6. No-go register — what the voice refuses

The voice refuses, structurally, certain rhetorical moves. Listed here for the agent's reference; do not deploy any of these in pz-voice prose:

  • SaaS hyperbole. "The future of X." "Transforms your Y." "Supercharges your Z." "From your first agent to your IPO." Cut.
  • Exclamation marks. Once a year, maximum. They signal effort-to-be-engaging; the voice doesn't try to be engaging, it tries to be precise.
  • Hedging without warrant. "I think," "in my view," "it seems," "perhaps" — used only when the writer is genuinely uncertain, never as a politeness move. The voice states.
  • Marketing affirmation. "Game-changing!" "Truly revolutionary." "Unparalleled." Not even ironically.
  • Buzzword stacking. "Synergistic leverage of holistic frameworks." If you can't say it without the buzzwords, you don't have the claim.
  • Empty intensifiers. "Really," "very," "quite," "extremely," "definitely." Most can be cut without loss; the others can be replaced with the underlying mechanism.
  • Faux humility. "Just a thought." "Not sure if this is right, but." The voice is not humble in this affectation; it is rigorous in its claims and surfaces uncertainty only where the argument requires it.
  • Inspirational endings. Paragraphs don't end on "and that's beautiful" or "the future is bright." They end on the implication of the argument or on the next argument's premise.
  • Apologizing for technicality. "Don't worry if this sounds complex." The voice presupposes reader literacy; readers who don't have it are not the audience.

7. Composition with the cultural-code register

The pz-voice is the signal — substance, the principal's actual thought. The cultural-code register (GitS / Eva / Iso / Magilumiere / Macx — encoded in marketing-site-design / minsky-brand) is the channel — bridge to the audience, the aesthetic frame the substance arrives wrapped in.

Both are needed; they operate at different layers. Composition principle:

Voice carries the substance. Cultural codes provide the bridge.

The balance depends on surface:

Rule of thumb for prose: if a paragraph could be entirely corpus citation with no GitS/Eva/Macx reference and still carry the claim, that's the natural balance. Add the cultural-code reference only when it crystallizes the claim more than the voice alone does — e.g., "the flock" as a single noun does work that "a coordinated multi-agent body operating around a principal" takes a sentence to do.

When the voice and the codes pull in different directions (the voice wants to make a careful technical claim; the codes want to invoke a dramatic GitS aesthetic), let the voice win in prose surfaces and let the codes win in visual surfaces. Don't try to be both at once — that produces "marketing-trying-to-sound-deep" which is neither.

8. Worked examples — before/after pairs

Example 1: announcing a substrate

Generic AI voice (off):

"Minsky is an innovative AI-powered platform that brings together your agents, tasks, and decisions into one unified, intuitive interface. By leveraging cutting-edge cybernetics, Minsky empowers you to manage your team's AI workflows like never before."

pz-voice (on):

"Minsky is the exocortex for a technical principal who runs work through a flock of agents. The product is a substrate, not an app; the principal declares intent and the substrate routes execution. Agency is the scarce resource; Minsky's job is to make sure it lands on the right work."

What changed: declarations replace claims; the mechanism (declare → route execute) is named; agency-as-scarce is invoked (theme tag); SaaS hyperbole is gone; the semicolon-pattern is back.

Example 2: explaining attention allocation

Generic AI voice (off):

"Effective AI agents need to know when to escalate to humans. Our innovative attention-allocation subsystem helps your AI know when to ask for help and when to keep going, making sure you only get interrupted when it really matters."

pz-voice (on):

"Attention is the scarce resource in any agent-led organization; the principal's attention is the binding constraint, not the agent's capability. Minsky's attention-allocation subsystem treats this as a routing problem across a taxonomy of asks: capability-escalations to bigger models, direction-decides to the principal, authorization-approves to policy, coordination-notifies to peer agents. The default is to absorb; the principal is touched only when the policy is silent and the question is preference-bound."

What changed: the scarce-resource framing is named (theme tag); the structural model (routing across taxonomy) replaces the hand-wave; the default direction is stated (absorb, escalate only on policy-silent + preference-bound).

Example 3: closing a section

Generic AI voice (off):

"In conclusion, by adopting Minsky, you'll be well-positioned to take your team's AI capabilities to the next level. The future of agent orchestration is here, and it's better than ever!"

pz-voice (on):

"The principal substrate is empty in the AI-tool category; Cursor is an IDE, Devin is an agent, LangGraph is a framework, Claude Code is a harness. None of them holds the principal's attention as the binding constraint. Minsky does."

What changed: the inspirational ending is replaced with the structural claim that motivated the paper; the no-go register (game-changing, future-is-here) is rejected; the closing lands on the differentiating fact, not on a feeling.

9. Writing process — how to use this skill

When asked to write in pz-voice for a specific surface:

  1. Load substance from corpus. Run memory_search with the relevant theme tags for whatever the surface is about. Read the memeplex entries thoroughly before drafting. The substance comes from there.
  2. Draft in the semicolon rhythm. Write declaratively. Mechanize. Implicate. Avoid hedging unless the argument requires it.
  3. Use precise vocabulary. Every technical term in section 3 has a precise sense; use them precisely or not at all. Casual deployment of cybernetic or exocortex is the tell of off-voice writing.
  4. Apply the no-go register check. Before shipping a draft, search it for the rejected patterns in section 6. Replace each instance with the structural claim it was avoiding.
  5. Compose with cultural codes per surface. Apply the voice/codes balance per section 7's table.
  6. Verify corpus-groundedness. Every substantive claim should map to a theme tag. If a claim doesn't, either find the corpus entry that supports it or surface it as an open question rather than asserting.

10. Anti-patterns specific to writing in voice

  • Pastiche. Stringing semicolons and technical terms together without holding the underlying stance. Reads like an agent imitating Eugene rather than Eugene writing. Fix: re-ground in the corpus; read three memeplex entries before continuing the draft.
  • Over-quotation. Quoting too many corpus citations directly; the voice should be the corpus, not constantly cite it. Fix: cite by theme tag in the draft; quote verbatim only where the specific phrasing does work the paraphrase cannot.
  • Faux-rigor. Using the technical vocabulary correctly but without mechanism. "The mind is a cybernetic control system" without saying what makes it one. Fix: every technical term in a substantive claim should be backed by the corpus mechanism for why it applies.
  • Voice without stance. Writing in the semicolon rhythm with the precise vocabulary but stating claims that violate the operative-ontology stance (treating reified entities as substantial, treating description as causation, etc.). Fix: re-check section 5; the stance constrains what the voice can say.
  • Linking tweets in foreground prose. Per Eugene 2026-05-19: too on the nose. Quote phrases without linking; the corpus is for the agent's verification, not the buyer's pursuit. Cross-reference by theme tag.
